What it does

Every feature below exists in the shipping build. We don't advertise capabilities that aren't on the laptop. Interface available in 14 languages, picked on first run.

Core /

Free forever. No account, no telemetry, works offline on site.

01

Static IP

Configure static network settings by shortcut or by pasting a client's free-form notes — onto their segment in seconds, not a phone call and twenty minutes of waiting. Handles the edge cases: gateway+subnet only (finds a free IP, sensible DNS defaults), or IP+subnet only for local devices like receipt printers and cameras. When the mask never made it into the PM's notes, the Subnet Resolver infers it — and ranks the evidence behind every guess.

02

Troubleshoot

Guided diagnosis with plain-English explanations of each failure, plus quick tools: ping, continuous ping, traceroute, port check. Switch-port probes (LLDP/CDP/EDP/FDP, trunk/VLAN, 802.1X, FHRP), port-health fault testing, and a blink-port LED locator live here. Packet probes ride on Wireshark (free, installed by you from its official site) — the probe buttons stay disabled, with an in-app install guide, until it's there.

03

Wi-Fi

Surveys nearby APs, charts channel congestion per band, and recommends a clear channel. A live walk-test meter (real-time RSSI, link rate, band/channel, security) and a roaming/BSSID tracker that logs every AP hop — built for chasing dead zones and sticky-client drops.

Pro /

Unlocked by license key. One key, every Pro tab.

P1

Speed Tests

Runs Ookla CLI plus web providers (Speedtest.net, Fast.com, Cloudflare, nPerf) back-to-back. Auto-starts each test, waits for final numbers, and screenshots every result as proof. Auto or click-per-test modes, and a branded report for the customer.

P2

Topology

Subnet sweep with ARP/OUI enrichment rendered as an interactive network map. In RackRat-Engine, discovery runs on our own self-written engine — nothing extra to install; in RackRat-Classic it rides on Nmap, installed by you.

P3

MAC Tool

Sweeps a subnet into a searchable IP · MAC · vendor · hostname inventory with CSV export, and hunts a specific MAC — full address or OUI prefix — across the segment. Finds devices that answer ARP but ignore ping.

P4

Cameras

Finds IP cameras via ONVIF WS-Discovery plus a camera-port sweep; pulls each camera's IP · MAC · vendor · open ports, identifies the brand and a best-guess RTSP path, then validates the stream (codec/resolution/FPS) and grabs a snapshot as evidence. Per-brand config guides included (Avigilon, Axis, Ubiquiti, Cisco/Meraki, Reolink).

P5

Throughput

iperf3 laptop-to-laptop testing, including >1 Gbps over fiber with multiple streams. One laptop serves, the other runs; pair by manual IP, mDNS auto-discovery, or Tailscale. Live rate meter, upload/download/bidirectional, TCP or UDP with jitter and loss.

P6

Traffic

Rogue-process triage on a service call: lists every process holding a live TCP connection, resolves remote hosts, checks Authenticode signatures, pre-flags malware tells, then checks remote IPs against AbuseIPDB and VirusTotal using your own free API keys — clean / suspicious / malicious verdicts in-app. Run elevated for full SYSTEM-process visibility.

When the network info never makes it to the field

The project manager forgot to forward the IP settings. It happens on every other job — and the tech finds out standing at the drop. RackRat turns that dead stop into thirty seconds of work: paste whatever scraps you have (a sticky note, a text message — "IP 10.4.3.50, gw 10.4.0.1") and the Static IP tab parses them free-form. Mask missing? The Subnet Resolver works it out from evidence on the wire — the existing lease, the ARP cache, quiet boundary probes — and shows you the reasoning. No call-back, no guessing /24 and hoping.

Alert risk, marked before you click /

On a site with an IDS/IPS, NAC, or managed EDR, some field tools are — on the wire — indistinguishable from attacker recon. They can page a SOC or get your laptop quarantined off the port. RackRat marks every noisy tool in the app so you know before you click.

Loud

Expect an alert, a NAC action, or real disruption. Subnet scans, blink-port, throughput server mode. Clear it with the site contact first.

Notable

May be logged or alerted on. Speed tests, camera discovery, packet-capture probes. Usually fine once site IT knows you're on the network.

Quiet

Passive or local only. Safe on a sensitive production network.

A ⛔/⚠ marker on every tab, an expandable notice above each noisy tool (what it puts on the wire, how it looks to the customer's security stack, and the quieter way to get the same answer), and a full matrix behind the ⚠ Alert risk button.
